It’s common to feel some sense of apprehension when walking into a gym for the first time, or taking up any new form of sport or exercise. It might even be easy to think that you’re too old to learn a new skill or discipline. But Barbara Rawlings, a.k.a. “Corki,” is proof that this isn’t the case. At the age of 86, she just celebrated her first full year as a regular at The Strength Co. gym, where she lifts weights three times a week.

The Strength Co. owner Grant Broggi, a family friend, suggested Corki visit his gym after she had a fall. He thought that if she were able to work on developing some strength, it would help her to stay healthier and injury-free moving forward.

“When I first came in here, I was definitely intimidated,” says Corki. “It wasn’t scary, it was just a challenge. I had never done anything like this before. The only exercise I ever did was walking.”

She soon rose to that challenge, though, and now trains with Broggi on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:30 a.m. “I’ve loved it, every minute of it,” she says.

“She’s been at it and at it, and she’s been lifting over 100 pounds now,” says Broggi. “She crushes it.” He explains that when they first began working out together, Corki would focus on just learning and perfecting one movement per workout, starting with very light weights, and then they built on that as she began to progress over time.

“I would definitely recommend weightlifting to anybody my age, younger, older, anybody, but particularly the older people,” says Corki. “It gives you confidence, it gives you strength to do your daily chores, it’s a very positive thing and I love it. I recommend it to anybody.”
