Senior citizens encouraged to join strength-training program | News

Salem Senior Center now offers “Stay Strong, Stay Healthy,” an evidence-based strength-training program designed for older adults. The eight-week schedule includes classes that meet twice weekly for one hour in the center’s comfortable community room. Rachel Buenemann is a community engagement specialist with University Missouri Extension-Phelps County. She teaches the classes and continues to be inspired by how each participant sees improvements in their health and quality of life.

“Most senior citizens have at least one chronic condition and building on physical fitness helps with that,” she explains. “People who take this class see progress in their day-to-day life; some notice they can walk easier while others’ improved postures make long car rides more enjoyable,” says Buenemann.

“Stay Strong, Stay Healthy” is free and provides weights for participants on-site. Buenemann encourages everyone to attend the classes and incorporate a third workout at home with the help of take-home guides. Throughout the session class meets on Wednesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and, while this round wraps up in January, you’re welcome to join now and sign up for the next full session coming in early 2022. With a pre- and post- assessment, you’re guaranteed to see results.
